How Open Access Papers Are Discovered
Open access papers appear in three places:
- AI Chat: ask the AI to find papers on a topic. The chat’s search tool includes open access papers alongside your library and external sources.
- Citation Search: when using
/citationin the editor, the Discover tab includes open access papers in its results. - Direct Links: if you have an open access paper’s ID, you can access it directly in the reader.
Reading Papers
When you open an open access paper, it renders in the built-in PDF reader. The top bar displays the paper title, a search button for finding text within the PDF, and a capture button for highlighting text for citation or AI discussion.
Saving to Your Library
- Open an open access paper in the reader
- Click the Add to Library button (bookmark icon) in the top bar
- Choose which collection to save to
- The paper’s PDF, full text, and metadata are copied to your personal library
- The button changes to show “Library Source” once saved
After saving, the paper is available for citation in any of your documents, just like any other library source.

- The AI can draw on the paper’s full text when helping you write
